How to Keep Sports Skills Sharp During Summer Break

During the school year, kids get a lot of exposure to organized sports, but once summer arrives, it might be harder to get them to practice. Since there are fewer organized sessions and in some cases, fewer kids around in the neighborhood, their skills might get rusty over the summer months. This is why it is important to plan ahead and make sure your child has plenty of opportunities to practice, even when there are no officially schedule practices with a team. There are plenty of alternative opportunities to stay fresh and keep your skills sharp. In some cases, summer offers a chance to improve greatly and really focus on mechanics or specialized areas of a game. Baseball training aids such as pitching machines give kids a chance to practice right in their own backyards. They are affordable and convenient, offering a chance to play even if nobody else is around.
If you want your child to get summer practice similar to how it is during the rest of the year, consider enrolling them in a summer league. This gives them a chance to stay in the team mentality and not break a rhythm they might have developed over the course of the school year. Playing with different kids might be beneficial as well. If they are playing with kids older or more talented than they are used to, it can challenge them to perform better. If the kids are not as advanced as your son or daughter, it will give him or her, a chance to mentor younger or less experienced children.
Many kids attend camps during the summer months. Sports camps are usually a week or two, but can last as long as the entire summer. A sports camp will immerse your child completely in the sport during their time in attendance. They will study the sport in a classroom setting, have practice time, run drills and train to be better athletes overall.
If camps and leagues are not in the budget at the moment, you can work with your child one on one. Although he may already be at a level beyond your athletic ability, it still gives them a chance to keep their skills sharp and their mind in the game. Working with your child is a great addition to other part-time sessions that expose your child to several aspects of a sport. For instance, if he is in a summer league and plays twice a week, you can add an extra day of practice with him on your own.
Finally, make sure he has enough time and motivation to practice as possible. You can make the practice sessions fun. If they are social, as they are with camps and leagues, encourage him to make friends and enjoy his practice time. Offer a chance to invite a few new friends over to the house for more practice or just to hang out. The more fun a child has while practicing a sport, the more he will develop a passion for it and want to excel.

Positives of High School Sports

t's Thursday night and one of your childhood friends just shot you off a text. You guys have drifted apart since elementary school but some ties that bind keep you in touch now and then. He and a few friends are going out to the water hole in the valley and want to know if you're coming out. Having been out there before, you already know the deal. Almost no good will come from going out there. The trek usually results in fights with the local high school, some kind of injury scaling back out after drinking, or cops paying an impromptu visit. None the less, some part of you wants to go. Wait a minute..you can't go...you have high school football practice and your position is pretty heavily contested. You text back that you can't make it. Later that night, you hear that they got in a wreck driving back out of the valley. That could have been you.
Age 14-18 is a squirrelly time from most teenagers. The impulse control part of the brain seems to be faulty for a good 4-6 years during which, there's a good chance you might make some pretty bad decisions given the opportunity. One of the positives of high school sports for a lot of teenagers is that it just keeps them out of trouble (or reduces it a little). Idle hands do the Devil's work and idle hands on a teenage are doubly productive.
We've talked about some of the pitfalls of too heavy an emphasis on high school sports but that's only half the story if we don't also mention the positives and there are many. Keeping teens out of trouble by providing structure is only one of the ways this is accomplished. A lot of teenagers feel ungrounded during that time. It's a tough period for many of them who find high school work itself to be overwhelming and the social aspect of high school life to be intimidating. Sports gives them not only a way to fit in but an outlet for all the energy that infuses high schoolers (whether they like it or not). For a lot of high school athletes, sports becomes the glue that keeps them in school altogether. The percentage of high schoolers that do not graduate is extremely high, especially in lower income areas. Sports provides a reason to keep at it for many players and that in itself, is a tremendous positive since graduating from high school has a huge bearing on future opportunities in a young person's life. High School sports can go further in that most schools have certain grade requirements in order to participate in high school sports. A young football player may be more motivated to play the game he loves than to pass algebra but the net result is the same...better grades in algebra.
There's also something to be said for the confidence and sociability that sports imparts on high school players. It takes a certain kind of confidence and resolve to out there in front of your piers, family members, and community in a competitive setting. That confidence can easily translate to performance in the workplace and is especially important in sales. I remember my friend telling me that all the outside reps for a certain internet company were Stanford lineman because they had such a swagger about them which translated directly into sales...even in a high tech product space. There's no better way to gain confidence in your abilities than through years of playing sports competitively. These positives with a touch of balance in other interests should make for strong and productive young adults.

The National Federation of State High School Associations

Last night, I was watching a spot on Frontline about the concussion dangers and heat strokes issues that plague high school football in Arkansas a while back. In the program, they followed the story of two kids who both had about the same brush with heat struck but with considerably different outcomes. One of the boys dies while the other survived and the program intimated that it was partially due to treatment administered directly after realizing each boy was suffering from heat stroke. Later in the program, they interviewed what was essentially the governing organization for high school sports in that State who basically stated that there weren't rules per se but guidelines. This brings up a great question, with high school sports being so prominent and widespread, what are the governing organizations that at least try to provide a semblance of order? To start with, enter the NFHS or National Federation of State High School Associations.
In the end, high school sports and functions are still mainly a State by State endeavor so any type of overarching organization can only be so authorization but there's still a lot that the NFHS can to help make high school sports fun and safe for all our players. Keep in mind that the NFHS is not just for sports but works to support cheer, music, activities, and various facets of high school life but we'll look at the sports side first.
The NFHS which can be found at www.NFHS.org You'll notice that the site is broken out into different sections but one of the most useful is separated by audience. For example, there is a section for Coaches. In this section, any coach in the U.S. can find informative news, rule changes, and support at one location. The news is helpful as a feed since it keeps coaches up to date on new safety guidance such as how to address heat stroke which might be the difference between life and death (or reduced life quality). This aspect alone makes the NFHS website critical for high school coaches. There's also a Sports Medicine tab within the coaches section as well as recognition for coaches based on merit nationwide.
You'll also find a section for officials. The NFHS partners with arbiterSports.com, a website managed by the Officials Association. There's a wealth of information including rule, changes, clarifications to help standardize the rules of high school sports and create a fair and level playing field. For both Officials and Coaches, there's information on insurance available to cover the tremendous amount of liability involved with high school sports. By pooling together many programs, the premiums can be held down.
The NFHS even provides guidelines on sportsmanship and good athletic citizenship for both player and coaches alike. This is important since a growing issue with high school sports is an escalating focus on winning at potentially any cost. There's definitely a rub-off from the pro's onto high school programs and a strong, cohesive umbrella of ethics becomes an important service of the NFHS to make sure that high school sports can remain vibrant and a positive force in high school life.

Getting Yourself Involved in Recreation and Sports

Aside from working at home/office or studying, you should also engage yourself in other activities that have something to do with recreation and sports. Although there is nothing wrong with concentrating on your job or your studies but it is definitely better if you also set some time aside to loosen up, exercise, enjoy and have fun. Regardless of your age, there are several benefits that you will be able to enjoy with such activities. Recreation and sports are two different words but they are definitely related to each other. They both refer to the activities that you do during your free time and get yourself involved with for enjoyment, fun or pleasure.
An evident benefit why many people consider a number of activities related to recreation and sports is the fact that these activities are of great help in improving your health condition. This is because exercise is already a part of a healthy lifestyle and recreation/ sports activities are also considered as forms of exercise. When you sit or stand all day at work, you will surely experience some problems like back and leg pains which are known to be very distractive and can make you feel uncomfortable. So to avoid this, you need to burn some calories in a fun and exciting way. Sports like swimming, playing tennis and many more will require you to move your arms, run and jump which means stretching your bones and muscles.
Getting yourself involved with such activities can also be a good way to strengthen the bond between you and your family/ friends. Sharing your interest in these activities with the people who matters to you is considered to be a quality time together. So instead of just staying at home doing the usual stuff, you can bring your family to a park or a recreation center where all you can play and have fun. But aside from having fun, for kids and even teens, playing different types of games means developing their skills. This is a very important part because during this stage of growth, they are in the peak of developing their thinking skills. While they are playing, their minds are also working in order to come with a plan or a strategy which they will use in order to win.
On the other hand, recreation and sports activities may vary depending on the person’s age. Playing tennis, bowling and basketball are just some of the sports that adults love to do. But when it comes to kids, things are a bit different. Although there are kids that also love the sports that adults do, most of them prefer to play the games that are really for kids like bean bag toss/ corn toss, hide and seek, kick ball, red light green light and many more. So regardless of the type of game and the age many people really consider sports and other recreational activities as a part of their lives because of the benefits that were mentioned earlier.

How to Get Better at Playing Basketball

Some people enjoy playing hoops just for fun and care very little about how good they are or how much better they could become. Other people are more competitive and even if playing is just for fun, they want to be the best among their friends or improve for personal reasons. There are lots of ways to get better at the game and improve your basketball skills. There is a variety of tools on the market that provide tips and techniques to help you get better. Hands-on practice, coupled with tools like basketball videos, will guide you in the right direction when it comes to being a more technically proficient and all-around better player.
The first thing you need to do to get better at playing hoops is to practice as much as possible. If you are serious about improvement, you will want to schedule practice time. This way you will not come up with an excuse when something else arises for you to do. You might be the type to just play when you feel like it or when friends are playing. However, if you really want to get better, you are going to have to be more disciplined, at least during your initial practice days. Once things begin to fall into place, you can create a less structured schedule.
Keeping up your enthusiasm for the game is another important part of getting better. Forcing yourself to play due to outside motivation quickly leaves you feeling drained and unsatisfied. Figure out what makes you feel motivated to continue practicing and improving. Do you enjoy watching the pros play on television or in person? If you want to keep your passion for the game alive; schedule time to practice on a regular basis.
Surround yourself with people who share your passion. Try as you might, it is normal for people to lose interest in things their friends and family have no interest in. If you have a few friends who enjoy playing or watching the game, you stand a better chance of staying interested. Even if your passion runs deep, you might get caught up in other things in life and put hoops on the back burner. To avoid this from happening, get together with a few friends to watch or play games. This keeps the game fresh and alive in your mind and reminds you why you became interested in the first place.
Finally, schedule some alone time with the game. This gives you a chance to refocus. Head up to the court on a Saturday afternoon by yourself and shoot around. The activity will feel almost like meditating. You can enjoy the fresh air and play without concern for being in a competitive environment. This refocusing will motivate you to keep practicing and improving your game. Combining time with an organized team, practice time on your own and relaxed time enjoying the game without structure are three of the best ways to improve your skill set and keep your passion for the game alive and thriving.

How to Help Children Improve at Playing Basketball

If your child is into playing hoops, he might be looking for ways to improve his game. Basketball shooting and other skills associated with the game take a lot of practice. Basketball training is easy if you have the right equipment on hand. If your child takes an enjoyment in the game and decides to pursue it is his free time, you should encourage practice. It does not matter whether he wants to play just for fun, for a school or community league or in hopes of getting a sports scholarship from a college, there are plenty of great practice options that can be combined to help him improve his game. In addition to the organized game time and practice time, there are lot of things he can do on his own time to get better and more proficient at playing.
Aside from organized practice, schedule some practice time at home. This does not need to be as structured as practice time with his team. You can just head outside with him and shoot around or practice some of the simpler drills. Plan a Saturday afternoon at the park or the courts where you can play a pick-up game or some one on one. This not only gives him extra practice, it is fun to spend time together and gives you a chance to talk and bond without any pressure on anyone.
Make sure practice time is fun. It is important that the extra practice time is enjoyable. Practice time with his teammates and coach may not always be the best time in the world, so make sure at-home practice reminds him of why he wanted to play to begin with. If he has a passion for the sport, it is important to make sure this does not get lost. There is a lot of pressure on student athletes, and while this might not be the worst thing in the world, your job as a parent is to make sure it is balanced in a healthy way.
There are plenty of options when it comes to machinery and equipment for practicing. Some are major investments and might not be worth the time and money, or the space they take up. Others are more affordable. You might also decide the aids are worth it because of the trade off. If your child sees a vast improvement in his skills which translates to a scholarship, the equipment was well worth the money and time you put into it.
Finally, be sure you are encouraging your child without pushing too hard. He needs to understand why there is pressure on him and he needs to be able to manage it. Not all teenagers are capable of doing this. Support him and offer encouragement, but do not go too far. Also make sure coaches and teammates are not going too far either. Some pressure is good, but if things get too intense, your child might lose his passion for the game and nothing will be achieved if he chooses to give up on the sport.

Passing Game and Prep Football

A lot of high school football follows the slow, methodic grind of running the ball straight at the defense. It's a game of inches and 2-3 yards per down is not uncommon. Occasionally, if you don't turn your head for too long, you'll see a spark of energy hit the field and the fans watching the game. The ball takes flight and for a split second, we're all hanging on it's trajectory to see what the outcome is. Will the receiver catch it? Is the pass on target? Can the defensive back intercept the pass and hurl his body the opposite direction? The passing game is one of the reasons we watch prep football and it rarely disappoints. Let's look a little closer at how it functions at the high school sport level.
There's a reason most high school programs rely on the run. It's safer. Yea, you may only get 2-4 yards on a carry but you're likely to get something. A lot more needs to go right in order to complete a pass. There has to be enough time for the QB to get the throw off and it has to be delivered in roughly a 5 yard area of the field at exactly the right time. The receiver needs to get there while eluding his defender and finally, he needs to make the catch while hearing footsteps of defenders looking to make imprints on pads with their helmets. High school football players are getting more talented and sophisticated all the time but it still takes a lot to make it all come together at the pace and speed of today's game. This brings us to the necessary ingredient for all successful passing games. Talent at the key positions.
The high school passing game really relies on that year's pool of talent. Let's start with the quarterback. It's not just the physical ability to throw the ball and ideally the size to see over the offensive lineman but so much of the position comes down to calm under pressure. The high school quarterback has to quickly (real quickly) size up the field in real time as bodies are flying all over the place with most of them trying to drive him into the ground. Panic directly turns into errors which turns into interceptions and botched plays. The mental game for this position is probably the toughest requirement on the field. You can have a player with the physical abilities but not the mental toughness needed to successfully pass the ball. Looks, like this year will see a lot of rushing in that case. Let's hope he can hand off the ball well. The receivers require toughness in a different way. After using physical speed and agility to get free, he has to quickly find focus and clarity at the time of the actual catch to focus on the fast moving football ball. It's transition of all physical to all mental in a blink of an eye.
The running game also can free up the passing game in that the defense doesn't know what's coming. You have to keep the defense honest with the run in order to create space for your receivers. It also helps to have a great offensive line. The best cornerback can only keep tabs on a receiver for so long. Eventually, there's a gap or misread across defensive back zones and if the offensive line can keep the QB safe that long, pass complete! In the meantime, we'll keep standing up in the stands when see the ball in the air. It's what we love about high school football.

The 5 Most Popular Sports in Asia

Asia is a pretty big continent. Actually, it is the biggest and the most populated continent of the world. So, it’s only natural that the people living here to be fans of a lot of different sports. Both team sports and individual ones are very popular in Asia.
European football (or soccer) became extremely popular in almost all Asian countries, during the last few decades. This team sport, born in Great Britain, literally conquered the world. Countries like South Korea, Japan and China developed a real national obsession about soccer. Soccer is a game played by two teams of eleven players each, on a large, rectangular field, about 120 meters long and 90 meters wide. One game lasts 90 minutes and is divided in two 45 minutes rounds. The whole purpose of the game is to put the ball inside the other’s team goal. A goalkeeper guards the goal. The team that scores more wins the game. Unlike American football, European football (or soccer) restricts a lot physical contacts between players. It’s based more on a good control of the ball by the players, being a team sport where serious injuries are very rare. This is why soccer also becomes widely popular among women too.
Cricket, another team sport brought to Asia by the British, is very popular and loved in a lot of countries, like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan or Sri Lanka. Cricket is also played by two teams or 11 players, but on an oval field, with a diameter of about 200 meters. In the center of that field is the pitch, where two batsmen stand, waiting for a ball to be delivered by the bowler. If the batsman successfully fits the ball and then he runs to the other end of the pitch, it means that he scored points for his team. The rules of cricket are really complex and there is more than one way for playing this game. However, this is not stopping people from Asia to enjoy cricket and to play it for days. A single game of cricket can sometimes take even five days to be completed.
Table tennis can be played by single players or by teams of tow and it’s incredibly popular in a lot of Asian countries, like China, South Korea or Vietnam. Table tennis is played over a table with a net in the middle, with small plastic balls, requiring a huge amount of concentration and coordination from the players. The rules are a lot like those of field tennis: every players needs to send back the balls and if they don’t succeed doing so the opponent receives points.
Gymnastics is, for decades, extremely popular in Asia, especially in China, but also North or South Korea and other Asian countries. Gymnastics is basically an individual sport, although during big competitions the athletes also compete in teams. Women gymnastics involves four different events: uneven parallel bars, floor exercise, balance beam and vaults. As for men, there are six events: floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar. Each exercise of a gymnast receives point from a jury of specialists and the one that has more points wins a certain competition.
And, of course, this top wouldn’t be complete without mentioning old, traditional Asian fighting styles, collectively known as martial arts. There is a wide variety of such traditional sports, specific to certain countries, like kung-fu or wushu in China and karate or sumo in Japan.
