Learning the Float Serve

Submitted By: Hayley Merrett

One of the most important skills you can develop as a volleyball player is the float serve. A ball that is it with a float serve will actually float on the air as opposed to just being shot forward. This type of serve is important for several reasons. A ball that floats can be hard to track; it can be difficult to decide exactly where the ball is going to land. Because of this, the defenders have to be on their toes to ensure they are ready to move as the ball comes to them. Another importance of the float serve is the fact that the wind can catch and direct a floating ball, making it drop in a seemingly random place. The float can also be difficult to hit back due to its lack of spin.
Theory of the Float Serve:
Any ball hit over the net floats in its own way, right? The thing to understand about a float serve is that the ball has no spin on it. Removing the spin from a ball allows more air to affect the course of the ball from all directions. This gives it the ability to be affected by updrafts and wind currents with less resistance. Picture a bouncing ball without any spin rebounding off of a wall. That rebound will be more likely to follow an exact opposite path from the direction it hit the wall. When the same ball is hit at a wall while it is spinning, the ball has a tendency to bounce back at a completely different angle, often losing some of its speed in the process. Knowing the theory of the float serve should help to understand what you are trying to accomplish when serving.
Technique of the Float Serve:
The actual physical mechanics of serving a floating ball can be fairly easy to master. The method described here is for a right-handed server, but can be reversed for left-handers. When serving, you want to stand about a foot behind the endline, with your left foot in front, pointing straight ahead and your right foot turned almost sideways holding your weight. Facing forward should give your body about a 45 degree angle at the waist. Hold the ball ahead of you in your left hand, about waist level. Your right hand should be pointing upwards behind your head, slightly bent. Toss the ball a little over your head, slightly in front of you. Shift your weight to your left foot and hit the back of the ball with the flat of your palm. You should only be following through about halfway.
Tips of the Float Serve:
Once you have the mechanics down, it is time to perfect the technique. When holding the ball, you want to hold it so the air hole is in the center of your palm. The air hole is the heaviest part of the ball and will be affected the most by gravity. If it is facing down, the ball won’t spin when the air hole is pulled down. You also want to ensure that you hit the ball right in the center, with only your palm. Using your fingers or hitting it anywhere except the center of the ball will put more pressure on one side, thus causing spin. When shifting your weight forward, drag your back leg along the path of the hit. This helps guide your body in the straight line it needs to hit the ball correctly.
With some good practice, you will find it relatively easy to hit a float serve. This will create a ball that can be difficult to return, thereby creating an opening for a point without even having the ball hit back over the net. The perfect float serve can mean the difference between a good player and a great player.

Canadiens Early Season Struggles

Submitted By: Benjamin Twain

Inconsistency has reared its ugly head once again. After a shutout loss to the lowly New Jersey Devils and sub-par Columbus Blue Jackets, the Canadiens seemed to have finally hit a snag losing 3 of their last 4 games.
So what are the issues? Is it the inconsistency, which seems to have manifested itself in the bodies of the Canadiens? What exactly has made this team tick, in both a good way and bad way? One of the headline issues right now is the infamous second line, which makes those devoted to the religion of hockey cross themselves. At this point only one saying applies: You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. It doesn't matter who plays with Gionta and Gomez, or what punishments either of them take. It doesn't even matter how the team is doing. Right now, only two people can decide when Gomez and Gionta really get started. And those two people are, believe it or not, Gomez and Gionta.
Unfortunately, Jacques Martin's attempted force-drinking of the line has caused disruptions to the whole team's chemistry. That means it is still very difficult for the likes of Lapierre and Halpern to really get very much started with a line for themselves. So right now, messing with the team lineups isn't doing the team any favors.
If you build it, they will come. Aside from a baseball diamond, this famous quote can apply to the Canadiens powerplay. While it continues to come up short, it has, however, been effective in changing momentum. If only it changed momentum in a good way and not a bad one. However, powerplay quarterback Andrei Markov is back, which means that now the Canadiens can work on a more permanent powerplay unit, the real one, if you will. The players just need to focus on doing everything right. If they build a strong, fundamentally sound powerplay that creates chances then the goals will come.
Usually, at this point, goaltending is a huge question mark. Luckily, thanks to Carey Price, the only question mark about it is how much Carey can do with no defensive help.
Carey's defense has some decisions to make. Frankly, the entire personality of the defense has been unclear. They have been passive, then really aggressive, then plain stupid, and then simply weak at times, and it changes even mid-period. It really is impossible to criticize or compliment something that is this wildly inconsistent, not to mention irritating. Once the defense makes a decision, the constructive(or destructive as the case may be) criticism may begin.
And now for the fans. Ah yes, the lovely Canadiens fans. Well, I was going to write something insightful here, but then I realized that running and screaming is probably a better idea.
Overall, my view on the rest of the Canadiens season goes like this: Very. Careful. Optimism. We know what this team is capable of, now lets see what they aren't capable of.

Curtis Granderson and His MVP-Caliber Season

As usual, the Yankees are loaded with big name players in their starting lineup. Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez are headed for the Hall of Fame, Mark Teixeira has been an All Star several times, Robinson Cano is the reigning Homerun Derby champion, and Jorge Posada has been a fixture in the Bronx since 1995.
This year, though, their most productive offensive player has been centerfielder Curtis Granderson. He was acquired by the Yankees from Detroit in 2009 with a reputation as a productive player whose performance suffered greatly against left-handed pitchers. Curtis Granderson began his Yankee career in 2010 at the bottom of the order with muted expectations.
At first he lived up to that billing. He hit just .240 in the first half of last season with only seven homeruns. Against lefties his batting averaged suffered by 20 points and his slugging percentage was down about 200 points. He improved in the second half, and delivered about what was expected; occasional power, reaching base at a league-average rate, and covered centerfield adequately. Moving from Comerica Park to Yankee Stadium cost him some triples, so he was no longer a league leader in that category, but his overall slugging percentage improved slightly.
This year has been an entirely different story since a two-day seminar with Yankee hitting coach Kevin Long in August 2010 that closed his stance, added a two-handed finish and moved his hands back has turned Curtis Granderson into an All Star starter and an MVP candidate.
Through mid September he has scored and driven in more runs than any American League player and is among the league leaders in triples with 10 and homeruns with 39. He has come to bat more often this season than any other Yankee, and he is clearly the player igniting their offense. This performance has made him, along with the Tigers’ Justin Verlander and Boston’s Jacoby Ellsbury, one of the leading candidates for the American League Most Valuable Player Award.
"He's been MVP-like," Yankee General Manager Brian Cashman said to the New York Daily News. "When we made the deal, I didn't make any representations to ownership that we were going to be getting an MVP. What we acquired was a player we felt with above average power, defense and running; a guy that would steal bases and give us power from the left side. He's been exceptional."
"He's been outstanding," said Yankee pitcher Phil Hughes in the New York Post. "When he's on the field, he's been unbelievable and then there's what he means to this clubhouse. He's a super positive guy, always full of energy and real positive. He's been our spark. Every time we need a big hit, a home run, it seems like he's the guy hitting it. Every year it seems like someone steps up and has that sort of year. Robbie [Cano] did it last year and Grandy this year has been unbelievable."
If anything holds Curtis Granderson back with MVP voters it will be that he has delivered below-average play in centerfield this year. According to baseball-reference.com, his defense has actually cost the Yankees about four runs this season. Working in his favor is that the Yankees are the winners of the American League East, which hurts Ellsbury, and that Verlander loses points in some voters’ minds for being a pitcher who can be honored with the Cy Young Award.
Whether or not Curtis Granderson is crowned AL MVP, he will rightly be in the crosshairs of the Yankees’ postseason opponents as the Bronx Bombers compete for their 28th World Series title.

Football Boots

Submitted By: Adrian BRyan

In the modern football world, more than ever before, minute details that enhance performance is key to success for professional players. The factors determining the difference between success and failure is so narrow that any advantage is taken. Performance enhancements in sport is often talked about as either an improvement of mental conditions and positive thinking or with physical improvements such as training techniques and diet, as well as general life style changes such as ensuring an adequate sleep pattern. However, performance can also be improved in football through having the best performing footwear. The essence of the performance of the football lies in the studs that determine speed from a standing start, grip on the surface and being able to twist and turn with ease.
From early into the life of association football there was a recognition that the varying surface quality o which the game was played meant that footwear that could cope with this was required. Initially studs were made of metal which, while performing it’s job adequately led to serious injury to opposing players if the came into contact with the sole of a players boots. Metal was therefore replaced by a safer leather.
Football studs are now made of varying materials, but most are composed of either rubber or plastic. Plastic studs are easy to produce and are a low cost material while rubber is a softer material that can offer a greater degree of comfort to the user. It is for these reasons that plastic tend to be dominant on softer ground in the winter conditions and rubber when the ground is firmer in dryer climates. Rubber and plastic studs can be produced so that they are either fixed to the boot or are removable and replaceable. Aluminium is a minor material for football boot studs and are nearly always removable so that different lengths can be utilised depending on the surface of the pitch. Recent designs of football boots have positioned the studs in such a way that the weight of the user is evenly spread across the sole of the foot which can make a player move quicker and more efficiently.
Each type of stud and material used is designed for different surfaces of play. Long aluminium studs are required on soft ground as their grip is deeper. In soft ground the user will not feel the effects of the reduced comfort found in aluminium studs. In soft ground plastic studs are fit for purpose as they are shorter in length so offer more comfort and speed with grip not causing such a degree of attention. Rubber studs are ideal for the hardest of surfaces and are oft used on false surfaces such as Astroturf and indoor facilities. On these surfaces the heel faces greater impact with the surface so the studs will be slightly longer on the heel than the front area of the foot and around the toes.
As football continues to evolve as a multi million pound industry the demand for any slight improvement that can be gained from footwear continues and so the technology in studs will continue to be explored so that players can maximise their grip, speed and ability to administer dynamic change in direction.

Triathlon Race Day Tips By Triathlon Coach Richard Laidlow

Triathlon race day can be a stressful time, but hopefully you will find these tips can help take some of this stress away and allow you to perform to your best.
1/ Once your transition is set up walk through transition 4 times, from swim entry to bike exit and bike entry to run exit. Slowly visualize yourself racing through transition.
2/ Sit in transition for 5 mins after you have set up your bike. Watch the people around your transition space set up their transition, make a mental note of their equipment, this will help orientate you during the race.
3/ In shorter distance races such as Sprint or Olympic Distance, break two elastic bands and tie them around the top tube of your bike, then place your energy gels underneath the elastic bands so they are easily reachable during the bike segment.
4/ Same idea with your Sunglasses which during the rush of transition can easily get forgotten, dropped or trodden on! Place the arms of the sunglasses underneath the bands to hold them securely, then you can wait until you have got yourself into a comfortable position on the bike segment before putting them on.
5/ In a Duathlon use two pairs of running shoes one pair for the 1st run and one pair for the 2nd run. This will save time as you will not have to think about where you place your running shoes in T1, as well as then being able to put on sweat free, pre-positioned shoes in T2.
6/ The swim is the 1st part of the triathlon so make sure you do 5 to 10 mins of shoulder mobility exercises before getting into the water, whilst doing these exercises it gives you a good opportunity to visualze your whole swim from the start, right through to running into transition and finding your bike.
7/ Try to get into the water 10 mins before the start of the race, this will help you get acclimatized to the water temperature, as well as help your orientation of the swim bouys.
8/ Stop your goggles steaming up by putting a small amount of washing up liquid or shower gel on your finger tip and rubbing the inside of your goggles, allowing it to dry before the swim start.
9/ Always take a big mouthful of water from your race bottle after eating a gel, this helps increase the speed of gastric absorption by diluting the carbohydrate percentage you have just eaten.
10/ If the water is cold wear two good swim hats. Pull them well down over your ears thus preventing the cold water from entering your ears. This really does stop that horrible dizzy feeling. If you really suffer with this problem consider wearing earplugs.
We hope you find these tips of value and can put them into practice soon!
