Fun Facts About Shuffle Board Tables
Submitted By: Seomul Evans
If you are fascinated by shuffle board tables, you'd probably find these facts about the game to be pretty interesting, too. Let's take a look at some knowledge you can use to dazzle your opponents during your next game.
Did you know shuffleboard originate in the 15th century?
That's right. The game got its start in England during that century. Originally, the game was played with a heavy coin known as a groat. Because you shoved the groat across the surface, the game was known as "shove groat." Back then, the person whose groat was closest to the end of the surface without falling off won the point. Of course, as the style of money changed so did the game.
Did you know shuffle board was most popular in the middle of the 20th century?
Although shuffleboard always required some skill to play that skill started to be tested in the United States. By the start of the 20th century, New York had begun to organize tournaments around shuffle board tables. Many players gained attention for their skills during that time, but the game didn't skyrocket in popularity for another 40 to 50 years. During that time, more states started hosting the tournaments and more ordinary people started purchasing shuffle board tables for use in the home.
Did you know that shuffleboard tables come in a wide range of sizes?
While most people think of these tables as having a regulation or standard size, they are more varied and easier to fit into your home, as a result. The most common size tables come in 9, 12, 14, or 16 feet in length. They can also be anywhere from 16 to 20 inches wide. If you need a larger table, you can find versions that are 18, 20, and 22 feet in length. Keep in mind that these measurements refer to the entire table and not just the smaller playing surface. Also, remember if you are purchasing a shuffleboard table for your home to leave 2 to 3 feet around the table for player movement.
Did you know that "board" thickness mattered?
Have you ever noticed the difference in thickness between the playing surface or "board" on different shuffle board tables? Well, these surfaces can be anywhere from 1 ½ inches to 3 inches thick. Thicker surfaces can take more wear and tear. You also need to make sure the weights can run smoothly across that surface. Using a silicon spray to reduce friction helps a great deal.
Did you know shuffle board is played all over?
If you don't have the room for your own shuffleboard table right now, don't worry. You can find tables available in lots of different locations. Check with your local game halls or arcades, bars and pubs, and even community centers. These locations are very likely to have one of the tables. They might even host tournaments.
Did you know caring for the table was easy?
Once you have your own shuffleboard table, you'll find caring for it to be a breeze. As mentioned earlier, you can use silicon spray to keep the friction to a minimum. You should also wax the surface and make sure it is free of debris or dirt which can interfere with game play. Some tables have a polymer finish so they don’t need waxing just a spritz of glass cleaner occasionally.
Hopefully, you found these facts to be as entertaining as the game. Now get back to the game on your shuffle board table.

Air Hockey Tables: Relaxation Made Easy
Submitted By: Seomul Evans
Did you know air hockey could be good for your health and peace of mind? It's true. Let's look at how playing this fun game could be a great daily part of a stress-free life!
Today life is so fast paced that one hardly gets free time. It is very rare when one is able to relax by reading a book or by putting their feet up, by watching a good movie, or playing video games. But from now on whenever you have free time and you want to relax, try playing air hockey. Air hockey is an interesting and speedy game. You, your friends and family members can have really good time because you can play together.
If you want to get started, you first need an air hockey table. When it comes to buying a table, you'll find lots of styles, designs, and colors to choose from. If you want something that matches the bright colors and fun of your game room, you can find that. But you can also find air hockey tables with wood finishes and darker trims that would match the décor in the rest of your home better. No matter what the table looks like, you can begin using it immediately to solve some of the big problems facing people today.
• Do your kids watch too much television? Use your air hockey table to give them an alternative activity. Not only is it less violence than most of what they watch but it will also be interactive and less sedentary.
• Do you need to meet people? Start inviting friends and neighbors over for air hockey tournaments or parties. Before you know it, you'll have more friends than you know what to do with.
• Do you need a way to release stress? Grab a mallet, a friend or family member, and a puck then head for the air hockey table. A few rounds will help you work off that stress and leave you feeling more relaxed whether you win or lose.
• Do you need a method of bonding with your teenage children? You'd be surprised how willing young adults are to start talking once you get their minds on something else, such as a fun game of air hockey.
Honestly, nothing says enjoyment like air hockey. And because it doesn't require a lot of skill and doesn’t involve a lot of complicate rules, almost anyone can play it. Grandparents can challenge their grandchildren, siblings can challenge each other, and couples can fight it out over the table.
The downside is that you will need to spend money to buy that table. You can expect to pay a couple hundred dollars for the table with the average being between $300 and $400. As the quality of the table increases so does the price tag. However, you'll be saving money on other types of entertainment and you'll be able to use the air hockey table by itself without having to shell out $50 or $60 for a new video game every couple of weeks just to keep those expensive video game systems useful.
Overall, nothing is going to bring your family more hours of entertainment, more stress relief, and more fun than an air hockey table. If you're looking for an alternative to those other ways to spend your free time, look no further than those amazing air hockey tables.

Shotokan Karate and Self Defense
Submitted By: Aaron Landry
This is a form of Karate that was developed in the late 1800's by Fichin Funakoshi in Japan. He often had many public forms of demonstration and practiced mainly in dojo's at colleges all throughout Japan. He had many students, and at later stages of the creation of Shotokan, he and a few of his students had disagreements about the essence of karate, and the forms split to form new branches of karate all based on Shotokan. In fact, today, the original form of Shotokan does not exist in its original form, but is only taught from a few of the branches that broke out during the creation of Shotokan. Shotokan is not a karate of strikes. It is taught through kata, a series of moves and strikes done as a routine, and kumite, or free sparring. Kumite is done to practice the moves learned in each kata.
Shotokan, like most forms of karate, has a ranking system consisting of colored belts. In each belt there can be levels (for instance red belt, level one and two). Each level, or belt, has different kata's that become more advanced and technical. These moves learned in the kata then are transferred to the kumite free sparring session in order to try to perfect the skill in a real scenario. In order to advance in a level, one must preform the correct kata in front of his or her instructors in effort to move on.
Shotokan was not meant to be a means of fighting, but a way of finding ones self. Funakoshi developed a list of rules he called, Dojo kun, that he made all abide by when practicing Shotokan. This list consisted of five rules, the basis of Shotokan. These five rules were, seek the perfection of one's character, be faithful, strive to succeed, respect everyone, and refrain from violent behaviors. The karate was not a means of winning or losing, but to seek the perfection of self as well as in others. It was a means of personal perfection of the body and mind through strong means of self discipline and training. The actual karate learned is to be used to maintain the peace when hostility arises, rather than to destroy and humiliate the opponent.
These different forms of Shotokan are now taught all over the world. It is a great mean to get your body and mind in line and in shape. Karate is a great form of exercise and can increase ones strength, agility, endurance, balance and self discipline. It also carries over into other parts of your life as well. The mental training that you will go through will help you be successful as well. And lets not forget to mention the obvious ability to defend yourself if a situation arises where you must use the skills you learned to douse the situation at hand. Knowing how to defend yourself gives you a great deal of confidence when walking the streets. It feels good knowing you can protect yourself and your loved ones from a potential attacker.
